The oil paintings and water colors
of NYC artist Jehudith Sobel were on
exhibit in “The Artists’ Space” at
the National Bottle MuseumŽ in
Ballston Spa, NY during the months
of May & June. An opening reception
was held on Saturday, May 8. Sobel
is a well known American painter
with Polish/Jewish roots.
Born in Lwow, Poland in 1924, she
attended the Academy of fine arts in
Lodz, Poland where she studied with
the famous Abstract
Constructionists, Wladyslaw
Strzeminski and Stefan Wegner from
whom she learned the principles of
Modern Art as laid down by the
European Cubists. Sobel’s work was
selected for the First Exhibit of
Modern Art in Krakow in 1948/1949.
From Poland, she emigrated to the
newly founded Israel where she lived
for five years, becoming very active
in that country’s emerging art
world. Her work was collected and
exhibited by the major art museums
of Israel including the Museum of
Modern Art at Haifa, and regularly
shown in Israeli galleries before
she came to New York on a
scholarship in 1956.
In 1956, a solo exhibit of her
paintings was presented at the
Jewish Museum in NY. Her career in
the New York art world continued
with exhibits in the prestigious ACA
Gallery, the New Masters Gallery,
City College of New York as well as
in other galleries and art
institutions. Her post-impressionist
style shows the influence of
Matisse, Bonnard and Braque. When
Sobel and her architect husband
bought a summer home in Woodstock,
NY she began exhibiting at the
Woodstock Artists Assoc. and Museum
as well as other galleries there.
Art work for the exhibit, consisting
of 20 original oils & watercolors,
was provided by Jan Trypaluk of
Polish Fine Art, Ltd., of Saratoga
Springs, NY.For additional info,
